Technology Update of BNB Chain in Oct 2022

Summary

Major Tech update in Oct:

1. BSC Release v1.1.16 - BSC v1.1.16 is a temporary urgent patch to mitigate the cross-chain infrastructure between Beacon Chain and Smart Chain so that the cross-chain can be re-enabled back.

2. ZkBNB Release v0.0.4 and v0.0.5 - ZkBNB v0.0.5 was released, reducing the circuit constraint by half.

3. Akula - Multiple features have been ported into Akula.

4. BEP171 - Propose BEP171 to further enhance the security of cross-chain module.

5. BSC Validators Seat Expansion. Proposal 12 aimed to expand 23 BSC validators to 26 has passed and executed through the on-chain governance.

1. BSC Release v1.1.16

This release is a temporary urgent patch to mitigate the cross-chain infrastructure between Beacon Chain and Smart Chain so that the cross-chain can be re-enabled back. It is a hardfork release for both testnet and mainnet.

2. ZkBNB Release v0.0.5

ZkBNB v0.0.4 and v0.0.5 are two performance releases. These two releases focus on reducing transaction cost, rollup latency, and hardware requirements.  The improvements led to decreased  the constraints per tx by half and the TPS increase by 50%.

3. Akula

The major BSC features(FastFinality, NativeStaking) have been ported into Akula.

The team is working on the mine stage to support validator mode, there are lots of challenges and the total progress is ~50%.

4. BEP171

To further eliminate the pervasive effects of potential issues in cross chain module, BEP171 proposes the following enhancements:

• Upgrade IAVL proof verification to ICS23 spec.
• Apply timer lock to massive funds cross-chain transfer.
• Cross chain channels can be automatically paused by forged proof detection.
• Cross chain channels can be paused by any validator in an emergency.

5. BSC Validators Seat Expansion

BSC network goes further down the road to embrace the community and decentralization.

The community voted and passed proposal 12 to expand 3 more validator seats, so BSC gets 26 validators in total.
